Hi Folks,
today I am pleased to announce an exciting new facility.

SqueezePlug can now be used as a complete and very comprehensive Backup Solution for the Windows PCs in your network.

SqueezePlug can now act as a backup target in your home LAN. As an ultra low power device designed to be “always on” and available, it’s just what you want from a backup system. On your Windows machines simply install Genie9 and choose SqueezePlug as the target for your backups. Genie9 runs in the background on your Windows PC and monitors any changes to the system. When changes occur, they will be saved at regular intervals, the timing of which you can configure.

When I began with SqueezePlug 3 years ago I had already thought about such a solution, inspired by Time Machine – you probably know about that. But Time Machine is not available for Windows. Genie9 is something like a Time Machine clone and fits my needs exactly. But Genie9 is only the component running on the Windows Client. Where shall I store my backups? On the Client itself? I think that’s not a clever choice! So I needed an other backup target. What are the requirements?

Enough disk space to store the backups

Always available, so the Windows PC can backup when necessary

Ultra low power consumption

Reliable and robust service

So thinking about what the perfect device could be, I choose SqueezePlug.

I contacted the distributor of the Genie9 software and we both liked this setup, tested it and we are very happy about the results. It’s something like a win-win situation or even better a win-win-win situation. Why 3 times win?

For you — you will get a special price if you use Genie9 with SqueezePlug. A discount voucher will be created during the installation of Genie9 in SqueezePlug

For Genie9 — maybe they will sell more of their products

For the SqueezePlug Project — Genie9 will compensate us, assisting and enabling further development.

So now I’ve implemented Genie9 in SqueezePlug and you can use it if you like! All versions are free for 30 days testing and there is a free version with reduced features available. I recommend the “Genie Timeline Professional” version because of its additional features over and above the free version.

Where to start:

On SqueezePlug type “setup”

Choose <Misc_Services> <Genie9> <Install>

On your Windows PC search the network for the device “SQUEEZEPLUG” and for a share named “genie9″

Click on the installation package and install Genie9

After the installation you will see SqueezePlug as a backup target choose that and you will be ready to go!

Sounds easy? It is easy!!!

If you’d like to order Genie9 please click this link! Genie9 will see that you are coming from SqueezePlug and will support the project if you place an order.

Hi Folks,

I’ve made a script for you to simply “migrate” an official Raspbian HF or Wheezy SF Image to SqueezePlug V6. I would be very pleased if you check this out and report your comments. The steps are very easy and it goes like that:

Script to migrate a foundation image to SqueezePlug
Manually Steps to do:

Start with Raspbian HF or Wheezy SF from the official Images (the latest versions)

login with “pi” “raspberry”

sudo passwd root
nosoup4u (or one of your choice)
logout

login with “root” “nosoup4u” and the correct password for root

cd /tmp
wget http://www.squeezeplug.de/downloads/foundation_2_sp.tar.gz
tar xzvf foundation_2_sp.tar.gz
chmod 777 foundation_2_sp.sh
./foundation_2_sp.sh

Hi folks, Happy New Year 2013 !!!

GREAT NEWS!

I’m very happy to tell you that SqueezePlug for Raspberry Pi version 6 is now ready for download. I’ve changed a lot of details in the scripts, addressing both, usability and functions.

SqueezePlug Media-Server version 6 is based on the official foundation images and is available in two versions:

Raspbian “wheezy” (2012-12-16-wheezy-raspbian.zip)

Soft-float Debian “wheezy” (2012-08-08-wheezy-armel.zip)

Why different versions?
There are two versions of SqueezePlug 6: One Hard-Float (the standard version) and one Soft-Float. Hard-Float will give you an extra kick of performance, Soft-Float the compatibility to things not supported for Hard-Float, like Spotify and others. You can’t switch between these versions, you have to decide in the beginning. If you don’t like to use graphical x-stuff, which is unnecessary for SqueezePlug the performance of the Soft-Float version is absolutely o.k. So choose the Soft-Float version only if you like to use Spotify or some other Hard-Float incompatible software. It will be also possible to “upgrade” from the foundation images to Squeezeplug in near future.

What is SqueezePlug?
SqueezePlug is a platform for different Media-Servers:

Logitech Media Server (f.k.a. Slimserver, SqueezeBox Server)

MiniDLNA

MPD

Mediatomb

Twonky

Forked DAAPD

And SqueezePlug is a platform for different Media-clients or players:

SqueezeSlave

SqueezeLite

SqueezePlay (experimental)

Shairport

Omxplayer

And SqueezePlug offers some other services:

Crashplan

Owncloud

Webmin

Access-Point functionality

All these servers and players are ready to install by just a click.

Included features are:

Scripts for all SqueezePlug configurations

Expand RootFS automatically

Create a Swap File

Change Timezone, Hostname, Password, SSH-Keys,

Configure Network Settings incl. Access-Point

Support for wireless USB-Sticks

Change Overclocking and Memory Spilt

Handling of external drives

Cloning SD-Cards

Samba Server already included

HD-Idle included

Update functions included

Test and Change audio settings

All official Raspbian / Wheezy features like X-Server are available, nothing is purged by default. X-Server stuff can be deleted automatically if you like.

How to install SqueezePlug?
The Image comes as 3 GB! So it fits on 4 GB SD-Cards, not on 2 GB. 3 GB is chosen for compatibility with different sizes of 4 GB SD-Cards. You should expand the SD-Card to it’s full size during the initial setup.

1. Download, unzip and burn the sd-card
2. Start the Pi and find out the IP-Address (e.g. from an attached monitor, from your router or a tools like Advanced IP Scanner v2).
3. login with user: root and pw: nosoup4u
4. Follow the initial steps
a. Update SqueezePlug
b. Expand the Root-Filesystem to the maximum SD-Card size
5. type “setup” and choose the options you need and the scripts will do the rest for you.

You will find the images in the download section
Look for:

—————————————————————————————–

Hi folks,

GREAT NEWS!

I’m very happy to tell you that SqueezePlug for Raspberry Pi version 5 is now ready for download.

SqueezePlug Media-Server version 5.00 for Raspberry Pi is based on Rasbian Hard Float now and has some massive improvement in performance and in functionality!

SqueezePlug is a platform for different Media-Servers:
- Logitech Media Server (f.k.a. Slimserver, SqueezeBox Server)
- MiniDLNA
- MPD
- Mediatomb
- Twonky
- Forked DAAPD

And SqueezePlug is a platform for different Media-clients or players:
- SqueezeSlave
- SqueezePlay (experimental)
- Shairport
- Omxplayer

And SqueezePlug offers some other services
- Crashplan
- Owncloud

All these servers and players are ready to install by just a click.

Included features are:
- Scripts for all SqueezePlug configurations
- Expand RootFS automatically
- Create a Swap File
- Change Timezone, Hostname, Password, SSH-Keys,
- Configure Network Settings
- Support for wireless USB-Sticks
- Change Overclocking and Memory Spilt
- Handling of external drives
- Cloning SD-Cards
- Samba Server already included
- HD-Idle included
- Update functions included

The installation is based on the Raspbian Installer as a minimal installation from scratch. The kernel and all packages are up to date. There is no X-Server or other graphic things installed. The intention of SqueezePlug is to run a headless Media-Server and Player. So SSH is installed and activated. All you have to do is this:

1. Download, unzip and burn the sd-card
2. Start the Pi and find out the IP-Address (e.g. from an attached monitor or from your router).
3. login with user: root and pw: nosoup4u
4. Choose Raspberry Pi from the initial screen.
5. Reboot the RPi
6. Connect again and type: setup
7. Choose the options you need and the scripts will do the rest for you.

Please visit my blog to download the new image: http:/squeezeplug.de
Look for sp_rpi_500.zip

I’ll update my Wiki and videos later to regarding Raspberry Pi version 5.

There will be images for SheevaPlug, DockStar and GoFlex Net later this year.

Have fun,
Greetings,
Thomas
